Where Does Paisley Actually Come From?
The paisley pattern has one of the richest histories in fashion. Originally from Persia and Kashmir, the teardrop-shaped motif called boteh has been woven into fabrics for thousands of years. It made its way to Europe through trade routes in the 17th century, and became so popular in the Scottish town of Paisley that the pattern took on its name.
Throughout the decades it has had many lives, from Victorian shawls to 60s psychedelia, from 70s bohemian to 90s grunge. Every generation reinterprets it. And 2026 is no different.
Why the Scarf Is Having Its Biggest Moment Yet
What’s interesting about this summer is how the scarf has moved beyond accessory territory entirely. It’s no longer just something you tie around your neck or toss in your bag. Fashion people are wearing it as a top, as a belt, as a hair piece — as the centrepiece of an outfit rather than an afterthought.
The rise of Western-inspired dressing, the return of bohemian energy and a general move towards more intentional, investment-led styling has made the scarf the ultimate statement piece for 2026. It’s versatile, it’s timeless, and if you choose well, it lasts a lifetime.
My Personal Favourite: The Hermès Scarf
If there’s one piece that embodies everything I love about this moment, it’s my Hermès scarf.
Working in luxury retail, I’ve handled a lot of beautiful pieces over the years but there’s something about a Hermès carré that never gets old. The weight of the silk, the precision of the print, the way it holds its shape whether you tie it loose or knot it tight. It’s not a trend piece. It’s an investment that gets better every season.
How to Wear It: Four Ways
1. The Bandana Headscarf Fold your scarf into a triangle and tie it around your head, knot it at the back or the front. It gives any casual summer look an instant cool, retro feel. Works especially well with a simple white tee and satin trousers for an elevated, luxe feel or to keep it casual with jeans.
2. The Belt Fold your scarf into a long strip and tie it loosely around the waist or hips. Let the ends hang down for that effortless, undone look. The perfect way to add personality to a plain dress or high-waisted trousers.
3. The Classic Shoulder Drape The most elegant option, simply drape your scarf over your shoulders like a light wrap. No knot needed. It’s the kind of move that looks completely effortless but elevates any outfit instantly.
4. The Scarf Top Fold your scarf diagonally and tie it around your chest — knot it at the front or the back. I styled mine with satin trousers and ballet flats, letting the scarf do all the talking. No top needed. Bold, feminine and effortless.
